What Is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a specialized, evidence-based treatment that helps improve the relationship between parents and their young children—especially when behavioral challenges are present. Designed for children ages 2 to 7, PCIT gives parents tools to reduce disruptive behaviors, improve emotional regulation, and build a more positive, connected bond with their child.

Unlike traditional therapy that involves only the child or the parent, PCIT actively includes both in the session, using real-time coaching to build skills that can be used at home right away.

How Does PCIT Work?

PCIT is typically delivered in two phases, with parents and children participating together in each session:

1. Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

In this phase, the focus is on strengthening the parent-child relationship. Parents learn how to give positive attention, build trust, and respond to their child’s emotions in nurturing and supportive ways. This reduces negative attention-seeking behaviors and helps the child feel more secure.

2. Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)

Once the foundation is built, parents learn how to give clear directions, set consistent boundaries, and effectively manage challenging behaviors like tantrums, aggression, or defiance.

Throughout both phases, a therapist observes the parent-child interaction—often from behind a one-way mirror—and provides real-time coaching through a headset, guiding the parent in using skills effectively in the moment.

Who Benefits from PCIT?

PCIT is designed for children with:

  • Frequent temper tantrums

  • Aggressive or defiant behaviors

  • Difficulty following directions

  • Problems with attention or hyperactivity

  • Behavioral challenges at school or home

It is especially helpful for children with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), anxiety, or a history of trauma or attachment issues.

Parents benefit too. Studies show PCIT can significantly reduce parenting stress, improve confidence, and create a calmer home environment.

Why PCIT Works

Unlike one-size-fits-all parenting advice, PCIT is highly personalized and interactive. Parents receive direct support as they apply skills in real time, making it easier to build confidence and see meaningful change.

The results? Stronger relationships, better behavior, and more joy in parenting.
